Six Things You Need to Know About Facebook Connections | Electronic Frontier Foundation

Description

This going to come across a little smug in an "I got out ahead of this" way, but seriously, if you're using Facebook, and are concerned that, for example, you might not want a future employer to know what you do in your spare time, then you need to get out now, because it is becoming more and more clear that Facebook's business model is built on making sure they can find out. I don't just mean what you list as interests - they'll profile you based on all sorts of things that you do, or that your friends so, and then make that data publicly available. (The eagle-eyed among you will have spotted that I do have a facebook account again. It is solely for work purposes, as I test their API to work out what I can mine out of it for clients. I will not be friending anyone on it. I invite you to consider how fucking creepy it is that despite creating it with an email address I have never given facebook before, they are still able to offer me a list of 50 people I might know.)
